PS5 SSD speed requirements: the short answer
Sony recommends a sequential read speed of 5,500MB/s or faster for PS5 M.2 expansion storage. That is the safest buying target, but the published PS5 SSD speed requirements do not describe 5,500MB/s as a universal rejection threshold. Some slower PCIe Gen4 drives may still be recognized and formatted, although that does not guarantee stability, equal game performance or full compatibility.
For a new purchase, choose an SSD rated at 5,500MB/s or faster and verify the complete specification. The drive must also use PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, Socket 3 and Key M, fit the supported physical dimensions, provide effective heat dissipation and fall within the 250GB–8TB capacity range. A higher advertised number does not automatically make one compatible SSD better than another.
The same published M.2 guidance materially applies to PS5 Pro. PlayStation confirms that an M.2 SSD can be moved from an original PS5 to PS5 Pro by following its M.2 installation guide. Cover-removal procedures differ by model, but PS5 Pro does not have a separately published Gen5 requirement, higher speed target, different capacity range or different storage format.
- Buying new: target 5,500MB/s or faster rather than deliberately buying below Sony’s recommendation.
- Already installed: a lower PS5-reported result is a reason to verify the drive, not automatic proof of failure.

What speed does Sony recommend?
PlayStation’s current M.2 SSD requirements and installation guidance recommends 5,500MB/s or faster sequential reads. It separately requires a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe drive using Socket 3 and Key M, a capacity from 250GB to 8TB, and effective heat dissipation.
Supported lengths are 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110. The complete assembly, including its cooling structure, may be up to 25mm wide and 11.25mm thick, with no more than 8.0mm above the board and 2.45mm below it. Both single-sided and double-sided SSD devices are supported. M.2 SATA drives are not supported.

Is 5,500MB/s a strict minimum?
Sony’s wording is precise: 5,500MB/s or faster is recommended. The support page does not publish a hidden numeric threshold and does not state that every slower drive will always be rejected. Independent testing has shown that some below-recommendation PCIe Gen4 SSDs can format and run games, but those results are specific to the exact model, firmware, capacity and games tested.
That evidence should not be turned into a buying recommendation. Sony does not guarantee that every third-party drive meeting the written specification will work, and it warns that even an SSD rated above 5,500MB/s may not match the internal console SSD in every game. Successful formatting therefore means that the console recognized the drive; it does not guarantee ideal sustained performance or identical behavior in every title.
For a new purchase, select a model rated at 5,500MB/s or faster. If you already own a slower drive and PS5 accepts it, evaluate the exact warning, stability and game behavior before deciding what to do. A single lower number is not evidence that the SSD is damaging the console, but it deserves verification rather than being ignored.

Advertised speed versus PS5-reported speed
A manufacturer-rated sequential speed is normally an “up to” claim produced with a particular capacity, host platform, queue depth, workload, firmware, temperature and cache state. It is useful for comparing specifications, but it is not a promise that every system will reproduce the same result.
After a newly installed M.2 SSD is formatted, PS5 displays an estimated read-speed result. Sony does not publish the full workload, repeatability, margin of error or a laboratory-style validation method for that estimate. Treat it as a useful console check, not as a complete independent benchmark.
A measured example shows the difference. In GamesRadar’s WD Black SN850P review, the tested 1TB drive carried a manufacturer claim of up to 7,300MB/s. PS5 reported 6,293MB/s, while CrystalDiskMark on the review PC averaged 6,947MB/s across three runs. The drive still delivered solid PS5 loading and transfer results. The figures differed because they came from different hosts and test methods, not because one number automatically proved a defect.
The PS5 result may also vary with firmware, temperature and drive condition. A result below the manufacturer’s maximum is normal. A result below Sony’s recommendation deserves closer checking, but it should be considered alongside detection, warnings, stability, cooling and real game behavior.

Why some PCIe 4.0 SSDs perform differently
Controller and NAND
The controller manages how data moves between the console and the NAND flash. NAND type, channel layout, capacity and controller design affect latency, consistency and sustained speed. Two drives can advertise similar sequential reads yet behave differently with small files, long transfers or changing workloads.
DRAM and Host Memory Buffer
Some SSDs include onboard DRAM for mapping and management data. Others are DRAM-less and may use Host Memory Buffer, or HMB, to borrow a small amount of system memory on supported PC hosts. PlayStation states that PS5 does not support HMB for M.2 expansion storage, so a drive that relies heavily on HMB may perform below its PC marketing expectations.
DRAM-less does not automatically mean incompatible. Controller efficiency, NAND, cache design and firmware still matter, and a drive with onboard DRAM is not automatically faster in every PS5 workload. The practical question is whether the exact model meets Sony’s requirements and has credible PS5-specific evidence.
SLC cache and sustained performance
Many consumer SSDs temporarily use part of their NAND as a faster SLC cache. Short writes may complete at a high burst rate, then slow when the cache fills and data must be written into the main TLC or QLC area. This matters most when installing, copying or moving large games. It usually tells you less about a short level-loading event.
A nearly full drive may also have less working room for cache management and background maintenance, although the effect varies by controller, NAND and firmware. Sony does not publish a mandatory user overprovisioning percentage for PS5 expansion storage, so there is no reason to repartition or preformat the SSD on a PC.
Firmware
SSD firmware can affect stability, compatibility and performance. Check updates only through the exact manufacturer’s official tool and instructions. For example, Samsung says its supported SSD firmware can be updated through Samsung Magician and that updates may improve operational stability and performance. That tool is for supported Samsung drives, not other brands.
Never install firmware intended for a similar model, and back up accessible data when the manufacturer recommends it. PS5 system software should also be current before installation.
How heatsink and temperature affect SSD speed
Effective heat dissipation is a PS5 compatibility requirement and a performance factor. Under sustained activity, an NVMe SSD can reduce transfer speed through thermal throttling to keep the controller and NAND within safe operating limits. A drive may therefore reach a strong short benchmark while cool, then slow during a long transfer if cooling is inadequate.
The cooling structure must fit without force. An oversized heatsink can prevent correct seating or stop the expansion-slot cover from closing. Peak advertised speed has limited value if the drive overheats or the assembly does not fit safely. Does a faster SSD improve PS5 game performance?
Once a compatible drive clears Sony’s recommendation, a higher advertised number does not guarantee a visible improvement in every task. Different workloads stress different parts of the storage system.
- Console startup: PS5’s operating system remains on internal storage, so an expansion drive is not a universal console-boot upgrade.
- Game startup and level loading: results depend on the game, file layout and test method. Small differences between compliant drives may be difficult to notice.
- Fast travel and asset streaming: the game engine, decompression and broader I/O path matter alongside the SSD.
- Installation and copying: large transfers expose write speed, cache behavior, temperature and the speed of the source or destination.
- Moving games back to console storage: this can be much slower than moving them onto the M.2 SSD because the direction and destination behavior differ.
PS5’s internal storage is part of a custom console I/O architecture. A third-party SSD’s headline sequential figure is therefore not directly equivalent to the internal system’s complete data path. Sony also advises moving a game back to console storage if it produces problems while running from M.2 storage.

What happens if your SSD reports below 5,500MB/s?
Do not panic solely because PS5 displays one result below Sony’s recommendation. Also, do not assume that successful formatting proves the drive is fully suitable. Use the following checks:
- Verify the exact model and capacity. Different capacities in the same family can have different rated speeds.
- Confirm PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe. PCIe Gen3 and M.2 SATA do not meet Sony’s interface requirement.
- Compare the official manufacturer rating. Do not rely on a retailer compatibility badge or abbreviated listing.
- Update PS5 system software. Use PlayStation’s official update process.
- Check exact-model SSD firmware. Use only the manufacturer’s official utility and instructions.
- Confirm cooling and fit. Poor heat transfer can reduce sustained performance, while an oversized heatsink can create an installation problem.
- Evaluate actual behavior. Look for formatting warnings, instability, failed transfers, crashes or game-specific problems rather than judging the drive from one estimate alone.

- Interface: require PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe, Socket 3 and Key M. “M.2” alone is not enough.
- Sequential rating: choose 5,500MB/s or faster because that is Sony’s published recommendation.
- Capacity and form factor: stay within 250GB–8TB and one of the supported lengths.
- Cooling: include the complete heatsink dimensions and do not force an oversized assembly.
- HMB and DRAM design: be cautious when a drive depends heavily on HMB and lacks credible PS5 testing.
- Firmware support: prefer a manufacturer that provides official exact-model update and support tools.
- PS5-specific evidence: look for credible testing that separates manufacturer claims, PS5’s estimate and real game behavior.
PS5’s expansion interface is specified as PCIe Gen4 x4. A backward-compatible PCIe Gen5 SSD does not unlock Gen5 bandwidth in the console and should not be purchased for a presumed PS5 speed advantage. Likewise, PS5 Pro does not require Gen5 or a higher published sequential-speed target.
