PS5 SSD not recognized: what to check first
If your PS5 SSD is not recognized, the most common causes are an incompatible SSD type, an oversized or incorrect heatsink, incorrect spacer or screw placement, incomplete connector seating, outdated firmware, or failed SSD hardware. The correct fix depends on the exact symptom, so first determine whether the drive is completely absent, detected but unable to format, missing after previously working, blocking startup, rejecting game transfers, or only reporting insufficient speed.
- Confirm the exact SSD interface, capacity, size and cooling dimensions.
- Fully shut down and disconnect the console before touching the expansion bay.
- Check the spacer, retaining screw, heatsink clearance and connector seating.
- Reseat the SSD once, without force, then reassemble the console completely.
- Check for a formatting prompt and an entry under Settings > Storage > M.2 SSD Storage.
- Update PS5 system software and, where practical, the exact SSD model’s firmware.
- If the problem remains, test the console without the SSD and move to manufacturer or PlayStation support.

Identify the exact SSD problem
New SSD is not detected
If no formatting guide appears on first startup and no M.2 entry exists under Storage, the SSD has not been detected. Start with compatibility, heatsink dimensions, spacer placement and full connector seating. Do not try to solve complete non-detection by clearing the cache, rebuilding the database or formatting the SSD on a PC.
Formatting starts but fails
A formatting screen means the PS5 has detected the drive. A failure during formatting is therefore different from non-detection. Record the exact error, confirm that the console has current system software, avoid interrupting power, and check the SSD manufacturer’s support information. Persistent failure after one careful reseat may indicate faulty media or controller hardware.
Previously working SSD disappeared
Stop installing or moving games to storage that appears intermittently. A previously working drive may have loosened, developed a firmware issue, overheated or begun to fail. Fully shut down the console, inspect the installation once, then test the PS5 without the SSD. Repeated reseating or repeated power cycling can increase the risk of damage without identifying the cause.
PS5 will not boot with the SSD installed
Turn the console off completely and remove the SSD using the official procedure. If the PS5 then starts normally, the SSD, its fit or its compatibility becomes the leading suspect. Do not keep forcing restart attempts with a drive that repeatedly prevents startup.
Games cannot be moved or installed
If the SSD appears under M.2 SSD Storage, the hardware has been detected. A transfer or installation problem is not the same as non-detection. SSD is detected but reports insufficient speed
A reported speed below Sony’s 5,500MB/s recommendation is not the same as the drive being completely unrecognized. The SSD may still format and appear in Storage, but performance may not meet expectations. Some drives that depend heavily on Host Memory Buffer can also run below expectations because PS5 does not support HMB.

Confirm that the SSD meets PS5 requirements
Use the exact model number from the SSD or packaging and compare it with the manufacturer’s official specification sheet. Physical fit alone does not establish compatibility, and not every product marketed as PCIe 4.0 is automatically suitable for PS5.

Shut down and inspect the installation safely
Restart and Rest Mode are not sufficient before physical work. Fully shut down the PS5, wait for the power indicator to stop, disconnect the power cable and all other cables, and allow the console to cool. Work on a stable, well-lit surface. Touch a grounded metal object before handling the SSD to discharge static electricity proportionately.
Hold the drive by its edges and do not touch the gold connector contacts. Check that the heatsink remains within the stated dimensions, the SSD board is not bowed, the spacer sits in the groove matching the drive length, and the correct retaining screw is available. Inspect the connector, SSD edge and cooling structure for cracks, bending, melted material or other visible damage.
Stop immediately if you notice smoke, a burning smell, unusual or severe heat, melted material, visible connector damage or repeated boot failure. Disconnect power and contact PlayStation Support or the SSD manufacturer rather than continuing to test.
Reseat the M.2 SSD once
One careful reseat is reasonable. Repeated removal and reinsertion can wear or damage the connector and does not substitute for diagnosis.
- Confirm the spacer groove matches the SSD length: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110.
- Confirm the correct retaining screw is present and that the heatsink does not obstruct it.
- Inspect the SSD edge connector, board and expansion connector for visible damage.
- Hold the SSD by its edges, align the notch and approach the connector at the angle specified for the console model.
- Insert the SSD fully without force. Stop if it meets unusual resistance; remove it and realign rather than pushing harder.
- Lower the fully seated SSD onto the spacer. Never use the retaining screw to pull the SSD into the connector.
- Secure the drive gently. The screw holds an already seated SSD in place; do not overtighten it.
- Reinstall the expansion-slot cover and the console cover before reconnecting any cable or testing.
Do not operate the console with the expansion-slot cover removed as a cooling workaround. If the slot cover will not close normally, the cooling structure may exceed the supported dimensions.

Reassemble and test detection
After complete reassembly, reconnect the console and power it on once. A first-use formatting guide means the PS5 has detected the SSD. Formatting erases all data on the drive, so continue only after accepting that loss. If accessible data remains on another device, copy it elsewhere first. If important data is inaccessible, stop before formatting; this article cannot guarantee data recovery.
Do not initialize, partition or format the SSD on a PC solely to make the PS5 recognize it. PS5 performs its own complete M.2 storage format, and data erased by that process cannot be recovered through the console’s formatting workflow.
If no formatting prompt appears, check Settings > Storage > M.2 SSD Storage. A visible entry means detection succeeded. If formatting fails, note the error and continue to firmware checks. If the SSD reports insufficient speed, treat that as a compatibility or performance warning. If the drive is visible but games cannot be moved or installed, troubleshoot storage capacity and content-placement rules rather than repeating physical installation.
An SSD moved between compatible PS5 consoles does not normally require reformatting. Sign in with the same account when access to games on the moved drive is required.
Update PS5 and SSD firmware
If the PS5 reaches the home screen, use Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and install any available update through PlayStation’s official PS5 system-software guidance.
Where practical, an exact-model SSD firmware check can also help. This is manufacturer-specific guidance rather than a PlayStation requirement. Connect the SSD to a compatible PC only when you can do so safely, then use the exact manufacturer’s official utility. For example, Samsung Magician can report supported Samsung SSD details, health information and firmware updates; it must not be treated as a universal tool for other brands.
Never install firmware intended for a similar model. Back up accessible data where the manufacturer recommends it. A PC recognizing the drive does not prove PS5 compatibility, and Windows may not mount a PS5-formatted drive normally.
Isolate the SSD from the console
Reasonable diagnostic comparison, not an official PlayStation requirement: controlled comparison can help separate an SSD fault from a console-slot problem.
- Remove the SSD and check whether the PS5 starts and operates normally without it.
- Use the SSD manufacturer’s official PC tool to check whether the correct model and capacity are detected and whether SMART or health warnings appear.
- If one is already available, test a known-compatible SSD in the PS5 instead of buying another drive solely for diagnosis.
- If practical, test the original SSD in another compatible PS5 using the official installation procedure.
A compatible M.2 SSD can be moved between PS5 consoles without a new format, according to PlayStation’s guidance. PlayStation also confirms that an M.2 SSD from an original PS5 can be installed in PS5 Pro. Even so, a successful comparison proves only that the tested combination worked; it does not validate every heatsink, firmware version or regional SSD variant.
What Safe Mode can and cannot fix
Safe Mode’s Update System Software option can help when normal updating is unavailable. Clear System Software Cache addresses system-feature or performance problems, while Rebuild Database scans the drive and creates a new database of console content.
Neither action fixes an unsupported SATA SSD, incorrect spacer placement, incomplete connector seating, an oversized heatsink, a damaged expansion connector or failed SSD hardware. When to stop and replace or request support
Stop troubleshooting when there is visible damage, smoke, a burning smell, severe heat, melted material or repeated startup failure. Also stop after a verified-compatible SSD remains absent following one careful reseat, complete reassembly and current system software.
Contact the SSD manufacturer when the exact model is not detected by its official PC tool, reports health or firmware errors, or repeatedly fails PS5 formatting. Contact PlayStation Support when known-compatible storage also fails in the same console or the expansion connector appears damaged. Remove the M.2 SSD before sending a console for repair.

- Do not use an M.2 SATA drive or assume every PCIe Gen4 SSD is compatible.
- Do not run the SSD without effective cooling or stack another heatsink on an integrated one.
- Do not operate the PS5 with the expansion-slot or console cover removed.
- Do not initialize, partition or format the SSD on a PC as a detection workaround.
- Do not interrupt PS5 formatting, system-software updates or official firmware updates.
- Do not repeatedly reseat or power-cycle a drive that may be failing.
