When games leave PS Plus through a Game Catalog rotation, your subscription entitlement to those titles ends. Downloading a game first or leaving it installed does not normally let you continue playing after the catalog entitlement is gone.
That is different from claimed Monthly Games. Game Catalog titles belong to a rotating service library, while Monthly Games use a claim-window entitlement. For the wider eligibility, download and rotation rules, see our PS Plus Game Catalog guide.
What happens when a game leaves PS Plus?
Game Catalog access depends on two things: you need a qualifying PlayStation Plus plan, and the game itself must still be available in the service. If either condition stops being true, the catalog entitlement no longer provides access.
That means an active Extra or Premium subscription is not enough by itself once the title has left the catalog. The game files and the entitlement are separate. Sony’s current PlayStation Plus terms say downloaded subscription games remain playable only while the membership is valid and the game remains available in the service.
Can you keep playing a downloaded game after it leaves?
No. Downloading a Game Catalog title does not convert it into a permanent purchase.
The files can remain on your console storage, but the catalog entitlement no longer authorizes play after the title leaves the service. Sony’s current game-launch support also tells players with locked PlayStation Plus titles to check whether the game is still available through Plus.
You do not need to delete the installation immediately, but keeping it installed does not preserve subscription access.

What happens to your save data?
Downloaded games
Losing access to the game is not the same thing as deleting its save data. Sony documents downloaded PlayStation Plus game saves separately from the game entitlement: saves for downloaded games are stored on the PS5 or PS4 console.
Catalog departure is not documented as automatically deleting those local save files. That matters if you later regain a compatible licence to the game.
Streamed games
For streamed PlayStation Plus games, Sony stores saved data through PlayStation’s streaming systems. Sony also allows save transfers between streamed and downloaded versions through PlayStation Plus cloud storage.
That does not justify promising that every cloud save remains available indefinitely, so the safest approach is to treat saves as separate data and back up important progress where supported.
Back up important saves
If you have PlayStation Plus cloud storage available, you can upload supported save data before a game leaves. This protects your progress, but it does not preserve the game licence itself.
What if you buy the game after it leaves PS Plus?
Buying the game from PlayStation Store creates a separate purchase entitlement. In the normal compatible case, you can then use existing save data and continue playing.
Sony’s official PlayStation Plus guidance has specifically said that if a catalog title leaves and you later buy it, you can access your save data again as long as it has not been deleted.
Compatibility still matters. A different edition, a different regional release or a PS4-to-PS5 version change may use different save rules. Buying the same compatible edition and platform version is therefore the safest case.
What happens to DLC you bought?
Separately purchased DLC remains a purchase, but DLC does not replace the need for a valid compatible base-game licence.
Sony’s current PlayStation Plus games page says that if the membership expires or the base game leaves the service, access to DLC and add-ons associated with that subscription-provided game is also lost. Sony also says purchased DLC can be used again after access to the compatible base game is restored, including by purchasing the title.
So the key distinction is simple: you can still own the add-on, but you may not be able to use it until you once again have valid access to the base game.
Do you keep your trophies?
Yes. Earned trophies are profile data and can be synced with PlayStation Network. Losing catalog access to a game does not erase trophies you have already earned and synced.

What if the game returns to PS Plus later?
If the title later returns to the Game Catalog and you again have an eligible subscription, catalog access can become available again.
Do not assume every technical detail will be identical, though. The returning catalog listing could be a different edition or platform version, and Sony does not promise that every old installation, DLC combination or save will reconnect automatically.
Existing saves may still be useful when they are compatible with the returning version.
Game Catalog vs Monthly Games
| Game Catalog | Monthly Games |
|---|---|
| Rotating service library | Claim-window entitlement |
| Extra and higher | Essential and higher |
| Access ends when the title leaves | A properly claimed entitlement is not removed simply because the monthly offer ends |
| Downloading does not preserve catalog access | Claimed game remains account-linked while the relevant Plus entitlement is valid |
For the full rotating-library model, see our PS Plus Game Catalog guide. For the separate claim-and-retention model, see our guide on how to keep PS Plus Monthly Games.
The important difference is that a Game Catalog title can disappear from the service itself. A properly claimed Monthly Game follows a different entitlement model.
What happens when you change PS Plus tiers?
Extra or Premium to Essential
The Game Catalog requires Extra or a higher eligible tier. Sony says a downgrade takes effect at the relevant payment date, and benefits exclusive to the previous higher tier are then lost.
So if you move to Essential, Game Catalog access ends when that downgrade takes effect even if the game itself is still in the catalog.
Subscription expiry
Subscription expiry independently ends catalog access. A title does not need to leave the service for your own access to stop if your qualifying membership ends.
Premium streaming
Premium members can stream selected catalog games in supported regions. If the catalog entitlement to a title ends because the game leaves the service, catalog-based streaming access ends as well.
For the broader tier structure, see PlayStation Plus explained.
How to check when a game is leaving PS Plus
Sony says some Game Catalog and Classics titles have end dates and that departures are publicized ahead of time.
PlayStation has also used a Last chance to play area to highlight upcoming departures. Because console menus and regional interfaces can change, use that as a useful place to check rather than assuming one exact menu path will always apply.
For the most reliable current timing, check the game’s listing and PlayStation Plus area for your own account region.
Common scenarios
You downloaded it but never finished it
Access still ends when the catalog entitlement ends. Downloading first does not convert the title into a purchase.
It is still installed
The files can remain on storage, but the catalog entitlement does not.
You buy the same compatible edition
The purchase creates a separate entitlement, and a compatible existing save can normally be used again.
You own DLC
Purchased DLC still needs valid access to a compatible base game. Buying that compatible game can restore use of the add-on.
You downgrade to Essential first
Your Game Catalog access ends when the downgrade takes effect, even if the title has not yet left the service.
The game later returns
Eligible subscription access can become available again, but edition, platform, DLC and save compatibility can still matter.

Frequently asked questions
Can you keep PS Plus Extra games after they leave?
No. Game Catalog access ends when the title leaves the service. Downloading it first does not create permanent ownership.
Can you play an installed game after it leaves PS Plus?
Normally, no. The files may remain installed, but the subscription entitlement no longer provides access.
Do you lose save data when a PS Plus game leaves?
Sony does not document catalog departure as automatically deleting local save data. Downloaded-game saves are stored separately from the game licence.
Can you buy the game and continue your save?
Usually, in the normal compatible case. Sony has said that buying a departed catalog title can restore access to existing save data. Edition, region and PS4/PS5-version differences can affect compatibility.
What happens to DLC if the game leaves?
Purchased DLC remains purchased, but it may become unusable without a valid compatible base-game entitlement. Buying the compatible base game can restore use.
Do you keep trophies?
Yes. Earned and synced trophies remain part of your PlayStation profile.
What if the game comes back to PS Plus?
Catalog access can become available again if the title returns and you have an eligible plan. Do not assume every edition, old install, save or DLC combination will reconnect identically.
Is this the same as Monthly Games?
No. Game Catalog titles are part of a rotating library. Monthly Games use a claim-window model and follow different retention rules.
What happens if you downgrade to Essential?
Game Catalog access ends when the downgrade takes effect because Essential does not include the Game Catalog.
How do you know when a game is leaving?
Sony says catalog end dates are publicized ahead of time. Check the PlayStation Plus Last chance to play area and the title listing for your account region.
