Using PS5 Cloud Streaming on PS5 and PlayStation Portal
If you have PlayStation Plus Premium, PS5 cloud streaming can save you a ton of time and storage space. Instead of downloading a game (and waiting for patches), you can launch select titles instantly from the cloud on your PS5—or stream supported PS5 games directly on PlayStation Portal, even if your console is turned off.
Quick disclaimer: Cloud streaming availability (and which games support it) varies by country/region and can change over time. Some features also differ between PS5 and PlayStation Portal.
1) What “cloud streaming” is (and how it’s different from Remote Play)
Cloud streaming runs the game on PlayStation’s servers and sends the video feed to your device. That’s why you can start playing without downloads, updates, or using up your SSD space.
Remote Play is different. It streams from your own PS5 to another screen (like PlayStation Portal). Remote Play doesn’t require PS Plus Premium, but it does require access to your PS5. Cloud streaming doesn’t.
A simple way to choose:
- Use Cloud Streaming when you want instant play, your storage is full, or your PS5 is busy/off.
- Use Remote Play when you want to access installed games (including ones that aren’t streamable) from your paired PS5.
2) What you need before you start (subscription, regions, speeds, updates)
Here’s the checklist that covers most “why can’t I see the Stream button?” problems.
You need PlayStation Plus Premium. Cloud streaming is a Premium benefit.
You need to live in a supported country/region. PlayStation’s cloud streaming list currently includes the US, Canada, Japan, and many European countries (including Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and the UK). If you’re unsure, check the official list for your region.
You need a stable internet connection. PlayStation says you need at least 5 Mbps to establish a cloud streaming session.
For quality targets on PS5, PlayStation lists recommended speeds by resolution:
- 720p: 13 Mbps recommended
- 1080p: 23 Mbps recommended
- 1440p: 38 Mbps recommended
- 4K (2160p): 52 Mbps recommended
On PlayStation Portal, PlayStation lists minimums for its streaming modes, including 7 Mbps for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p.
Account note (Portal): Cloud streaming on PlayStation Portal isn’t available for child accounts.
3) How to use cloud streaming on PS5 (step-by-step)
Once you’re Premium and up to date, cloud streaming on PS5 is usually as simple as finding the Stream button.
- Make sure you’re signed in with the PSN account that has PS Plus Premium.
- Open PlayStation Plus from the PS5 home screen (or search for the game you want).
- Find a streamable game (from the Game Catalog, Classics Catalog, supported Store titles, and select free-to-play games).
- On the game’s page, look for the “Stream” button and select it to launch instantly.
- Play, then stop like normal—your progress can carry over because save data is stored in the cloud when you’re streaming with PS Plus.
Example of what you can stream: PlayStation’s cloud streaming page highlights that select PS5 games from Premium catalogs and supported Store titles are streamable on PS5 and PS Portal.
4) How to use cloud streaming on PlayStation Portal (step-by-step)
Cloud streaming on PlayStation Portal is built into the handheld’s UI. It’s separate from Remote Play, and it works for supported PS5 games.
- Update your PlayStation Portal to the latest system software. (Updates can add streaming features and quality improvements.)
- Sign in with the PSN account that has PlayStation Plus Premium.
- From the Portal home screen, select the “Cloud Streaming” tab (top-left area of the UI).
- Pick a game from one of the streaming sections (including eligible games from Your Library if they support cloud streaming).
- Select Stream. The game starts once the session connects.
Important limitation: On PlayStation Portal, cloud streaming currently supports select PS5 games—not PS4 or PS3 games.
Other Portal limitations to know: Some system-level social and broadcast features are not available while streaming on Portal (for example, certain party/group functions, messages via system UI, Share Play, and broadcasting).
5) Best settings and tips for smoother streaming (PS5 + Portal)
Cloud gaming lives and dies by connection quality. These settings make a bigger difference than most people expect.
Use fast Wi-Fi (and keep it close). If possible, use a strong home Wi-Fi setup and play within a reliable coverage area. Small changes—like moving closer to your router—can cut stutter fast.
Match your resolution to your network. On PS5, PlayStation lists different recommended speeds for 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and 4K streaming. If your connection can’t hold the higher targets, dropping resolution usually feels better than constant buffering.
Try PlayStation Portal’s 1080p High Quality mode (if your Wi-Fi is strong). A March 18, 2026 Portal update added 1080p High Quality for Remote Play and Cloud Streaming, which runs at a higher bitrate than the standard 1080p mode.
- Path: Quick Menu → Max Resolution → 1080p High Quality
- Note: You’ll need to restart the Remote Play / Cloud Streaming session for the change to apply.
Know when cloud streaming is the better choice than downloads. If you’re sampling a game, or you just want a quick session, streaming saves time and SSD space.
6) Common problems and quick fixes
Problem: I don’t see a “Stream” button on PS5.
- Confirm you’re on PlayStation Plus Premium (Extra/Essential won’t show cloud streaming).
- The game might not be streamable. Only select titles support cloud streaming—use PlayStation’s cloud streaming game finder/list to double-check.
- Cloud streaming might not be supported in your country/region.
Problem: Cloud Streaming tab is missing on PlayStation Portal.
- Make sure your Portal is updated and you’re signed in with a Premium account.
- Cloud streaming on Portal isn’t available for child accounts.
- Check that your country/region is supported (and note that overseas territories may not be eligible).
Problem: The stream looks blurry or feels laggy.
- Drop the streaming resolution first (it often fixes instability immediately).
- If you’re on Portal and your Wi-Fi is strong, try 1080p High Quality—but only if your connection can handle the higher bitrate.
- Aim for speeds that match your target resolution (PlayStation publishes recommended Mbps by resolution on PS5).
Problem: My game isn’t available on Portal streaming.
- Not every title is eligible, and Portal cloud streaming is currently limited to supported PS5 games.
