Do you need HDMI 2.1 for PS5 or PS5 Pro?

Most PS5 and PS5 Pro owners do not need a high-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 connection for ordinary 1080p, 1440p or 4K gaming at 60Hz. HDMI 2.1 for PS5 becomes important for 4K at 120Hz and PS5 Pro’s 8K output, while VRR and ALLM depend on the actual features supported by the display input—not the HDMI version label alone.

All PS5 consoles support the HDMI 2.1 specification and 4K 120Hz output. PS5 Pro additionally supports 8K 60Hz output with DSC on compatible displays, although only selected games support 8K and VRR is disabled while 8K output is active. Support for an output mode does not mean that every game offers that resolution or frame rate.

Therefore, check the exact input’s resolution, refresh-rate and gaming-feature support, plus the cable and every device between the console and screen.

What the HDMI label really tells you

HDMI version numbers identify specification generations, not a guaranteed feature set or maximum bandwidth. HDMI Licensing Administrator explains that HDMI 2.1 features are optional. A product can use an 18Gbps TMDS implementation while omitting FRL, 4K120, VRR, ALLM or 48Gbps operation.

Check the manual for the exact input. A television may reserve high-bandwidth modes for one or two sockets, while a monitor may offer its highest refresh rate only through DisplayPort. Bandwidth alone also does not prove that an input accepts a particular timing or supports PS5-compatible VRR.

The parts of the signal chain

A successful PS5 video connection depends on several separate capabilities:

  • HDMI specification label: the specification generation claimed for the product.
  • Available port bandwidth: the actual transport capacity implemented by the selected input and output.
  • Supported port features: the resolutions, refresh rates, HDR formats, VRR and ALLM modes accepted by that input.
  • Cable certification and condition: the category the cable has been tested for, plus whether the cable remains reliable at the required signal rate.
  • Intermediary-device passthrough: the video and audio features supported by every receiver, soundbar, switch, splitter, extractor, capture device or adapter in the route.
  • Device compatibility: whether the console and display negotiate the chosen signal successfully.

Console output resolution is not necessarily a game’s internal rendering resolution. A game can render below 4K, use reconstruction, upscaling or PSSR, and then produce a 4K output. Do you need HDMI 2.1 for PS5 at 120Hz?

Not for every 120Hz mode. Both 1080p at 120Hz and 1440p at 120Hz usually fit within an 18Gbps-class connection, provided the display accepts that exact timing through HDMI. The higher-bandwidth requirement becomes decisive when you combine 4K resolution with 120Hz output. In every case, the game must also offer a compatible 120Hz mode; the connection cannot create one.

ALLM is a feature-support question rather than a high-bandwidth requirement. Compatible televisions can enter low-latency mode during gameplay, but not every HDMI 2.1-labelled port supports it. PS5 can also trigger low-latency behaviour during VRR output when its ALLM setting is Off, and display behaviour can vary.

When HDMI 2.0 is enough

A full-bandwidth 18Gbps input remains sufficient for players who primarily use 60Hz output modes, including common 1080p, 1440p and 4K60 setups. At 4K 50Hz or 60Hz with HDR, PS5 may use YUV 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 rather than every full-bandwidth RGB or YUV 4:4:4 Deep Color combination.

An 18Gbps input can also handle 1080p or 1440p at 120Hz when the manufacturer lists that timing for HDMI. Check HDR and VRR combinations separately. PlayStation’s video-output guide explains that Video Transfer Rate can reduce a problematic 4K signal by changing the available colour format. It should normally remain on Automatic unless compatibility troubleshooting requires a change.

When HDMI 2.1 for PS5 matters

The clearest reason to use a high-bandwidth HDMI 2.1/FRL input is 4K120. The selected socket and complete signal path must support 3840×2160 at 120Hz; a general HDMI 2.1 claim is not enough.

PS5 Pro’s 8K support requires an 8K60 display with DSC. Only selected games output up to 8K, the system interface and media apps remain limited to 4K, and VRR is disabled during 8K output. PS5 Pro can make a 4K120 and VRR-capable display more useful in supported enhanced games, but the available modes remain game-specific.

PlayStation describes PS5 VRR as a feature for HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible televisions and monitors, with results depending on the game, visual mode and display. When buying a premium new display, prioritise explicit support for the combinations you need—such as 4K120, PS5-compatible VRR and ALLM—rather than the HDMI 2.1 label alone.

Practical recommendations by display type

60Hz setups

Keep a reliable 18Gbps display for 1080p, 1440p or 4K at 60Hz. Confirm its HDR support, but do not replace it solely because it lacks high-bandwidth HDMI 2.1.

1080p or 1440p 120Hz setups

Confirm that the HDMI input accepts 1080p or 1440p at 120Hz. An 18Gbps connection can be enough, but verify HDR and PS5-compatible VRR separately.

4K120 setups

Use an input that explicitly supports PS5-compatible 4K120 over HDMI 2.1/FRL. Verify the cable and every pass-through device.

PS5 Pro 8K setups

Confirm 8K60 with DSC on the exact input. Only selected games support 8K; the interface, media apps and every enhanced game do not automatically output at that resolution.

How to check a port and signal chain

Start with the manufacturer’s manual. Check the timing table for the exact socket and the complete combination you need, such as 1440p120 or 4K120 with HDR, PS5-compatible VRR and ALLM. Some displays require an enhanced-signal or game input mode.

Separate cable certification from port capability. Premium High Speed HDMI cables are certified for full 18Gbps use such as 4K60 and HDR. Ultra High Speed HDMI cables are certified for configurations up to 48Gbps and use an official certification label. Certification confirms the cable category; it cannot add unsupported features to a connected port. Equally, a capable port cannot compensate for a damaged or inadequate cable.

The cable supplied with PS5 and PS5 Pro is the best first choice for 4K120 or 8K testing. When replacing it, use a properly certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rather than relying only on wording such as “8K cable” or “gaming cable.”

Inspect every video-path device. AV receivers, pass-through soundbars, HDMI switches, matrix switches, splitters, extractors, capture devices and active adapters can restrict bandwidth or features. Every pass-through device must support the complete chosen signal.

ARC and eARC return television audio to a soundbar or receiver. If PS5 connects directly to the television and the soundbar uses a separate ARC/eARC connection, the soundbar is not in the PS5 video path and does not limit 4K, 120Hz, HDR or VRR. If PS5 connects through the soundbar or receiver, that device must pass every required video feature.

Sony’s eARC guidance confirms that eARC carries television audio to a compatible receiver or soundbar; it is not the forward PS5 video connection.

If a mode fails, connect PS5 directly to the correct display input with the included cable, as advised in PlayStation’s picture and sound troubleshooting guidance. After confirming the path, use the site’s recommended PS5 video-output settings.
